Event Description:
The Community Computer Donation and Refurbishment Day is a full-day, hands-on event organized by Ordina’Coeurs Pour L’Afrique to engage the local community in sustainable technology practices. The event invites volunteers, students, and local residents to participate in the collection, refurbishment, and preparation of computers for donation to schools and community centers in Africa.
The program begins at 8:30 AM with an opening session that outlines the objectives of the day, including the environmental benefits of refurbishing computers, the educational impact for recipients, and the importance of responsible technology reuse. Participants are introduced to the process of assessing, cleaning, and preparing donated devices, as well as the logistical steps required for international shipment.
From 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, attendees are divided into teams to perform practical refurbishment activities. Tasks include hardware inspection, software installation, cleaning and sanitization of equipment, and basic troubleshooting. Experienced volunteers and IT mentors provide guidance, ensuring that each participant gains hands-on experience and understands the significance of their contribution.
A lunch break is scheduled from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, providing an opportunity for networking and discussion about technology access, the digital divide, and ways participants can contribute to future initiatives.
The afternoon session, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, focuses on educational workshops related to technology and community impact. Participants learn about digital literacy programs in African schools, how refurbished devices are integrated into classrooms, and the broader social benefits of increased access to technology. Case studies and success stories are shared to highlight the tangible impact of the donations.
From 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, volunteers engage in packaging and labeling refurbished computers, preparing them for safe transport. Emphasis is placed on quality control, ensuring that each device is functional, ready for use, and accompanied by basic instructions for recipients.
The day concludes with a reflection session from 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM, where participants share their experiences, insights, and ideas for future initiatives. Certificates of appreciation are distributed to acknowledge the contributions of volunteers, reinforcing the sense of community and shared purpose.
The Community Computer Donation and Refurbishment Day provides a unique combination of practical training, volunteer engagement, and social impact. Participants leave not only with technical skills and awareness of global digital inequality but also with a tangible sense of accomplishment, knowing that the devices they prepared will contribute to education and opportunity in African communities.
